New and experienced gardeners are invited to a series of four half-day workshops on backyard veggie gardening run by SAGE, Sustainable Agriculture and Gardens Eurobodalla. This is the fourth year SAGE has offered the workshops which teach how to establish and maintain a successful vegetable patch at home.
Workshops will run on various Sundays throughout the growing season around Moruya starting this Sunday 25 August from 12pm to 4pm. Tickets include notes, lunch and afternoon tea prepared with local seasonal produce.
Workshop presenter and successful home gardener Alison Walsh has been gardening since childhood, and her love of growing food and feeding people continues today. Using organic growing techniques, and a plan, Alison has a constant supply of food that feeds three neighbouring families regularly, with an abundance for her frequent visitors and preserving.
“The Backyard Veggie Gardening series is perfect for beginners wanting to learn how to grow food, and for anyone who want to improve their skills and make their gardening more effective. Having a productive vegetable garden is easy when you know how. You just need some time, good guidance and a plan,” Alison said.
“The series starts with everyone learning how to prepare a plan that suits their own garden and food needs. We then learn about planting techniques and soil health, compost and support structures, watering and bed maintenance. We do a tour of three successful backyard gardens where everyone can ask questions and learn how different techniques can be put into practice.
“The last session is about problem solving and solutions including topics such as pests and diseases, green manure and soil maintenance, and preparing for the cooler months. These workshops are very practical, and participants should be prepared to get their hands in the dirt,” said Alison.
Tickets cost $200 for all 4 sessions for SAGE members, or $220 for non-members, or you can attend individual sessions for $60 for members and $70 for non-members. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit www.sageproject.org.au in the events section.
